My series "Throw & Alter" explores the strength and patience of clay by creating heavily modified pieces with visible marks of wheelthrowing. In some cases, after throwing a thin cylinder on the potter's wheel, I cut out the rings and re-assembled them. Although one may use an extruder or cut out of a slab, my theory is that wheel-thrown arches are much stronger and less prone to stress, thanks to the repeated compression of particles when the cylinder wall is being pulled.
