My series "Throw & Alter" continues to explore the strength and patience of clay: after throwing a thin cylinder on the potter's wheel, I cut out the rings and re-assembled them. Although one may use an extruder or cut out of a slab, my theory is that wheel-thrown arches are much stronger and less prone to stress, thanks to the repeated compression of particles when the cylinder wall is being pulled. This experiment with ultra-light rings indeed held up well during triple firings. The sister rings from the same cylinder became a sponge holder. Their life cycle can be found on my Instagram.
